Humidity is measured as relative humidity—the amount of water vapor in the air compared to the maximum it can hold at a given temperature. Warm air can hold more moisture than cool air. That means when you heat the air, the relative humidity drops, even if the actual amount of water in the air stays the same.

For example, if your home has 50% relative humidity at 68°F, raising the temperature to 75°F can lower it to around 35%. You’ll notice the difference—especially during winter, when outdoor air is already dry.

The Effects of Dry Air

When indoor humidity drops below about 30–35%, you may start to feel the effects:

  • Dry eyes, skin, and sinuses, which can cause irritation and increase susceptibility to colds.
  • Static electricity, making hair stand on end and clothes cling.
  • Cracking in wood furniture and floors, as wood loses moisture and contracts.
  • Unhappy houseplants, since many indoor plants prefer higher humidity.

If you notice these signs, your home’s air may be too dry—often a result of high heating levels combined with low outdoor humidity.

On the other hand, humidity above 60% can create ideal conditions for mold, dust mites, and unpleasant odors. This often happens in areas where moisture builds up, such as bathrooms, kitchens, and basements. Proper ventilation is key—especially after showering, cooking, or drying clothes indoors.

Excess humidity can also make your home feel cooler, since moist air transfers heat away from your body more efficiently. That can tempt you to turn up the heat even more, which only worsens the imbalance.

Finding the Ideal Balance

A comfortable and healthy indoor climate typically falls around 68–72°F with 40–50% relative humidity. At this level, both people and materials in your home tend to thrive. To maintain that balance:

  • Ventilate regularly—open windows for a few minutes several times a day to let fresh air in.
  • Avoid large temperature swings—keep a steady, moderate heat setting.
  • Use a hygrometer to monitor humidity levels.
  • Consider a humidifier during the heating season if the air becomes too dry.
  • Ventilate extra in moisture-heavy rooms like bathrooms and kitchens.

Heating Habits and Home Health

Many people think turning off the heat completely in unused rooms saves energy, but that can actually cause moisture problems. Cold walls and corners can collect condensation when warm air from other rooms meets them, leading to mold growth—especially in older or poorly insulated homes.

It’s better to maintain a consistent base temperature throughout the house, even in rooms you don’t use often. Keep doors closed, but don’t let the temperature drop below about 60°F. This helps prevent condensation and keeps your indoor climate stable.
